Adolescence is a time of deep relational engagement where the body’s changes becomes so important we take up all these interactions when healing.

Adolescents are learning to have symbolic experiences for the first time. Image production is relational. It’s generated on it’s own cord. LaFace is interested in how images bridge mind and body, inner and outer in adolescents. Their movement is out into the world and away from family.

We chose Bev Hollander for the 2010 Imagery Person of the Year because she has been an integral part of our Imagery International organization and our hearts since 2007, having served as Board Member, President, and Editor

Bev Hollander IPY 2010

of II’s Journal ImagiNews. Under our fun-loving trail blazer’s forward thinking cutting-edge intuition and editorship, ImagiNews has become the glue that holds our international community together. In honoring Bev, who introduced the use of a theme for each publication, the 19 selected themes from her published issues are used randomly in the expression of II’s deepest gratitude for all that she has given our community in so many ways. It is with great respect that we honor Bev with the esteemed Imagery Person of the Year award. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor, Bev!

A TRIBUTE TO BEV

Bev, coming on the Board of Imagery International while also starting an Editorship of ImagiNews created “New Beginnings” for you. To jump right in with “Courage” allowed you to overcome the initial overwhelm of your first journal issue. Right from the beginning, your determined “Resolution” and “Intention” that everything done for ImagiNews would be for the greater good and “Growth” of our Imagery International “Community” became evident.

Bev Hollander, Judith Ewing r. reads tribute

The “Clarity” of your focused “Intuition” to provide themes around which articles can be written still brings “Illumination” to the ways Imagery can be used in “Healing.” The “Passion” within your “Compassion” has guided the alignment of our authors’ messages of “Hope” and “Joy” in sharing transformational modalities and practices in working with Imagery. This in turn has opened “Portals” of “Opportunity” for us as healthcare practitioners to take on the responsibility to reach even greater depths of awareness and understanding of Imagery in order to make important “Transitions” to support and embrace our clients.

Another delightful feature of ImagiNews initiated by your “Kindness” is the invitation to artists to showcase their original art on the cover. This provides international exposure for them, and it graces our cover with beautiful Images. Then, there is “Serendipity”—finding something valuable and pleasurable when looking for something else. In the beginning, Imagery International was looking for a Board Member, a President, and an Editor. What we found was a most valuable and pleasurable “you” who has taught us on many levels the importance of Transforming to the fullness of compassion, wisdom, and love.

A free electronic copy of June 2011 edition of ImagiNews is available here:

http://imageryinternational.org/imaginews-journal

From the Co-Editors’ Desktops

By Bev Hollander, BSN, MS, HNB-BC and Judith Ewing, M.Ed., M.A., CIH

Bev’s Thoughts

Here’s another ImagiNews – water under the bridge flowing downstream to you, our faithful readers and members. This issue itself flowed quite nicely, in complete contrast to our previous issue. Juliet, II’s President, reached out to her many friends and colleagues and we have been blessed with the most submissions ever. WOW!!!! We even have enough to save for our March and June issues.

Judith and I are now moving in a nice rhythm as we work towards release of each issue. There has been a clear Transition to this place of ease and comfort with each other. Judith has that “Southern Charm” that could talk the leg off of a dog when she asks for something. I am learning how to use it to my advantage as well and am very grateful for this lesson. I must say, the honor bestowed upon me as your Imagery Person of the Year has touched me deeply. I hadn’t realized my contribution, nor thought I had done anything special, particularly in my work with ImagiNews. Perhaps not so very surprisingly, I found it challenging to receive such gifts and forced myself to stay in an open-armed and receiving stance to take in the praise and love. Thank you so very much. The award is absolutely beautiful and holds a place of honor in my home.

I was particularly struck with the vibrancy of colors as well as the story of this issue’s cover painting by Schar Freeman. What a beautiful story that actually is not about the Transition of Death, but Schar’s Transition to a place of strength, connected to Owl, Mother Earth and Grandmother Moon while facing a health contribution to us. Please send your hopes, dreams and love our way in any form possible – poetry, story, photos, case studies, letters to the editors – whatever strikes your fancy BUT related to Imagery, please. Look for our new submission standards on the web – to be posted soon. March’s theme is Enlightenment and articles will be due

2/1/2012.

Aloha,

Bev

Judith’s Thoughts

At our 3rd Annual Conference, Carl Hendel shared during his presentation that the greeting “Aloha” carries the deeper meaning “Breath of life.” The out-pouring of our members and readers in support of the auction for our Scholarship Fund, accompanying the generous inpouring of your articles to support ImagiNews breathes a precious aliveness into your co-editor’s and Imagery International’s endeavors. You are phenomenal! And, a special Thanks to our President, Juliet Rohde-Brown, for having wonderful friends who responded to her call for articles. The publishing of your articles brings high quality to our journal, and we thank each of you for your contributions.

As we Transition into 2012, it will be an interesting year in that it is the “ending” of the Mayan Calendar. That we always surround every Transition with love and hope is important for “Enlightenment”—which we have selected as the theme for March 2012. Then for June 2012, our theme will be “Ritual.” Although we have some of your articles saved for those themes, right now there is room for more. So, it is still important to keep the contributions coming for these next issues. Also, Bev and I are in the process of refining Submission

Guidelines that will be posted on the Web soon. One significant change is the new deadline for submissions is being moved up to the 1st of the month prior to the publication of the quarterly issues for March, June, September, and December.

Although we especially miss Dr. Gerald Epstein’s column this month, we are really looking forward to the Enlightenment that he will bring to the March ImagiNews.

The beauty of Schar Freeman’s exquisite painting resonates to the depths of my being. What a beautiful image to Transition into Strength! This message captures the essence of Transition. Thank you so much for giving your permission to showcase your art on this ImagiNews cover.

Now, I wish to congratulate Bev on her being chosen for our International Person of the Year, a most deserved honor. A tribute to Bev can be found on page 10. I want her to know the privilege it is for me to work together on ImagiNews with her….and how much I enjoy the laughter we share together as we tap dance through our roles of co-editorships.

And, to our wonderful authors, readers, and members…..may you always be surrounded by rainbows around your sun, heart, and moon as you come across Transitions in your life’s journey.

Aloha,

Judith

Her work in sound and healing music came from her own amazing recovery from breast cancer in 1999, when she was able to eradicate two tumors in as little as six weeks with the sound of her own voice. Amrita has a degree in the Health Arts and Sciences and is an inspiring teacher and public speaker. Also, she is an accomplished musician and singer. Her music artfully blends her playing of crystal singing bowls with her high, clear singing. She has shared her healing story and her work with the crystal bowls at the United Nations, as well as the NY Times and CBS News.

“I joined the staff of Imagery International because I really believe in the work. Having been through some dramatic health challenges in the past, and using visualization to assist in my healing, I wanted to support the great work of Imagery International. I’ve been involved in the work of healing with sound and music for the last twelve years. Imagery is just the perfect complement to the other work that I’m doing and would like to learn more.”

Thanks for joining our staff Amrita. We look forward to lots of great work and times together.

Dr. Mark Lawrence, noted psychiatrist died on July 22, 2011.

In 1984, he co-founded the Center for Healing and Imagery and taught workshops on using Imagery in therapy. Dr. Lawrence was a member of Imagery International (II) and lived in McLean, VA. He was a gifted clinician and teacher who created a powerful model that, in his words, “integrates the dynamic concepts and techniques of state-dependent learning, dissociation, hypnosis, imagery, and gestalt therapy.”

He kept up with the latest developments in neuroscience and had a brilliant and curious mind. He trained hundreds of therapists and was sought after as a consultant and a therapist.

A graduate of his program and II member, Gary Goodwin, had this to say: “Dr. Lawrence was a wonderful person and a masterful Imagery teacher. He was much beloved for his gentle, engaged, and generous manner. His unexpected passing has left a hole in the hearts of those who knew him.”

We at II are saddened at this great loss to our Imagery community and the larger community of the world.

The Center of Healing and Imagery will continue with its wide list of Imagery training. Also, Dr. Lawrence had been co-authoring a book on ego states and Imagery with his daughter and it will be published in the near future.

Wow, what a ride! I joined your Board in January of 2007. March 2007 was my first issue of ImagiNews, and I can hardly believe it – December’s issue will be 5 full years! I am feeling very proud of where we started and where we have come. From a single editorship we have evolved to a jointly shared effort. Yes, what a ride!!!

As we mentioned on our list-serve, Judith & I are a bit later than originally intended with this issue’s publication. We regret any inconvenience this delay may have caused you. As a benefit to all of us, the delay has given me the Opportunity to ponder my contribution and, for both of us, the Opportunity to create an even more spectacular issue for you.

Judith Ewing

Between the time spent on editing and the moment we put the issue “to bed,” Judith & I have the Opportunity to communicate regularly by email and telephone. The same optimism and excitement we feel when we decide on the issue’s theme comes full circle as we laugh together and finish the work that we believe so ably and aptly demonstrates that chosen theme. Combine that excitement with the joy of seeing the finished product from Jenn, our Graphics Designer, and we are always amazed at how professional and letters to us confirm we are on the right track.

Judith and I divided the editing process completely this time and, as a result, we are looking forward to reading some of your contributions for the very first time when it returns from Jenn. We hope you find our content educational and rewarding, as this is always our intention.

I am so grateful to Judith for her support and intelligent enrichment of this journal – your journal. And now is your Opportunity to contribute to our greatness with your wise words and stories for the December issue with its theme of Transitions. Judith and I anticipate continued joy in our work together so please give us something to “chew” and send it to us by Nov 10th. Send to: bev@ sheppardwest.com or judith1001@msn.com

Please remember, your Letters to the Editor are always welcome at any time – same email addresses.

Thank you for all you do!!!!!

Warmly,
Bev & Judith

Here we meet again. Portals was a theme that Judith and our dear friend & colleague (also your President!), Juliet, suggested. The story is exquisitely told by Judith in an article herein. Serendipity and synchronicity abound!

As the submission deadline approaches, I almost always worry that we won’t have enough to fill the issue. Phew! I was wrong once again. Does this show a lack of Faith? I wonder. I thank each and every one of you for your support, insight and creativity. You make ImagiNews GREAT!!!!!

For each of us, Portals are experienced in many ways as they take us beyond and through such excitingly different adventures. Hope that you enjoy the Portal perspectives and excursions within our June 2011 ImagiNews! I loved working with Bev on this issue, and I love your contributions! You are such an integral part of our ImagiNews. What Portals will open as you begin thinking about contributions for our September theme – “Opportunities”. Keep the articles coming! The September deadline is August 10th.

Jean Houston, PhD is a pioneer in the human potential field. We have been receiving notice of a 7-week course entitled “Awakening To Your Life’s Purpose.”

In this promotional email she offers one of the core modules to help you to Activate Your Life Purpose. Because it involves Guided Imagery we wanted to share what she has to say:

Have you ever felt that the world simply isn’t ready for the work you were meant to do? Like the role you were born to fill simply isn’t believed to be possible by society?

It’s a frustrating–and all too common–experience.

Fortunately, I have the antidote. And I’m going to give you a hearty helping of it in this message.

This is the second key to living your life’s purpose: Developing new skills.

How to Access Your “Inner Experts” to Quicken Your Learning.
——————————————————————–

One miracle I’ve discovered in my 50 years of researching the outer limits of human potential is the existence of inner experts–in every single person, without fail.

The fact is, you have a wide array of these experts, willing inner helpers, so many masters of varied skills and attitudes–Cook, Painter, Plumber, Psychologist, Healer, Mechanic, Accountant, Inventor, Poet, Relationship Expert, Parent, Orator, Lover, Student, Teacher, Theologian, Traveler, Meditator, Comedian, Animal Companion, House Cleaner, Writer, Singer, Group Organizer, Group Member, Time Manager, Mystic, Compassionate One.

There are many others who only you would know. Some hold the mastery of a particular skill that you have, like swimming or playing the violin or weaving or woodworking.
Others represent your various roles and relationships, daughter, sister, best friend, best buddy, mentor.

Anything with which you have familiarity and practice, however small or large, has an inner expert who is always available to support, consult, and inspire your outer efforts.

First, choose a skill you would like to work on and ask the master of that skill to come forward. This being leads you to a place nearby where you can work together to improve your skill. All the materials you need are there–paints, piano, golf clubs, tennis rackets, computers, dancing shoes–whatever you need.

The very space around you seems filled with the essence of your skill. At this level of the psyche, an enormous amount of information is available, which is not normally processed by the conscious mind. Your inner master of a skill has access to all the knowledge that you ever gleaned, consciously or unconsciously, about the skill, as well as some new tricks. When you call on the master, some of this hidden knowledge can be harvested and integrated into your learning.

Let’s see how this works.

The master of the skill may communicate with you in words without them. Perhaps the teaching will feel like a muscular sensation or appear as a sudden intuitive knowing. You may be advised to practice old skills, or you may be taught new ones. However it happens, this being who holds the mastery will give you deep and potent instructions. As you receive this intensive training, you will feel increasingly free, spontaneous, and confident, even overcoming any inhibitions or blocks that you had.

You will be working with subjective time in this exercise, so get a timer with an alarm (here’s one online <http://www.online-stopwatch.com/> ).

Give yourself five minutes of clock time, which is equal subjectively to all the time you need. In these minutes or hours or days, you will have a rich learning session with the master of the skill, rehearsing and improving your skill.

Close your eyes and begin…

Coming back now, notice how you feel in your body. Is the skill more a part of you? Do you have a greater feeling of pleasure and confidence about it? Are you looking forward to performing it?

In fact, if it is possible for you actually to engage in the skill now, please do and notice if technical improvements have taken place. Practicing with the inner master is something you can do over and over again.

After a while, you will not have go through the steps to call up this member of your crew. The inner expert will be so much a part of you, it will be as if you are receiving instructions and improvements whenever you practice.

You can employ the same procedure to call upon other members of your inner crew who have mastery in other skills or qualities of excellence. If you give time and practice to rehearsing skills on the inner level, their outer manifestations will grow in you more quickly.

Yours in purpose,

Jean

Evolving Wisdom, 369-B Third Street, Suite 302, San Rafael, CA 94910, USA

This is one of the many techniques I’ll be revealing to participants in my 7-week course “Awakening To Your Life’s Purpose.”
