The integration of CAM in the treatment of chronic breast cancer

Recent evidence suggests that, in many cases, tumor cells have already seeded metastatic sites even when the primary tumor is diagnosed at an early stage.  Approximately 30 percent of breast cancer patients diagnosed with early-stage disease have been found to have breast cancer cells in their bone marrow. [1]. Other studies of the SEER database reveal that for many patients breast cancer is a chronic disease which extends over many years [1,2].

In these patients the primary therapeutic objective is to induce prolonged remission which may be achieved either with chemotherapy or with CAM (complementary and alternative medicine). Since with time cancer resists any chemotherapy, patients are left with the second therapeutic option. CAM provides several  means to induce remission, yet  not all are equally effective. These methods exploit three instincts:

1. A self healing instinct, which may be boosted by means e.g. diet, or acupuncture.
2. Imagination: Guided imagery  may induce remission and thus slow down cancer progression.
3. Empathy: Many patients live with cancer in peace for many years. I call them Cancer-Yogis. In the same way as a Hindu Yogi controls his physiology, Cancer-Yogis control their cancer remission and may prolong it.   In cancer support groups patients meet Cancer-Yogis, and learn by empathy their way to induce remission.

These instincts operate directly on physico-chemical processes in the body [3].  I believe that in widespread cancer these methods are more effective than chemotherapy. Currently I advise my patients to master meditation (Vipasana). learn  guided imagery from an expert, and join cancer support groups in order to interact with  Cancer-Yogis.

From the President’s Mind & the Editor’s Imagination

by Bev Hollander

Hello everyone. Thank you for the tremendous response to my plea for articles. You made this July ImagiNews possible. I had been feeling somewhat discouraged and especially concerned about letting all of you down without a June issue. You lifted my spirits with your support.

As you may recall, the theme is “Resolution.” Most of the articles address the theme directly, while others do so indirectly. I think it’s another winner.

As you will find out when you read Sandy Warnken’s article – our new website is up and running pretty darn well. Don’t you just love the artwork and colors on each page!? Sandy and our Website Technologist, Jenn, have done a marvelous job! Thank you for your perseverance and patience. Please be sure to review the personal info we have for you as an Imagery Practitioner. You can edit your own information there. Whatever we could cull from your membership application is what is there. I have found that mine needed updating. Be sure to check out yours.

We are especially excited to have our conference registration process readily available online now. It’s a breeze to register for the event. Take a look at Imageryinternational.org. and find the link to the conference registration.

There will be six fascinating workshops by accomplished presenters, along with great musical entertainment on Saturday evening. We have included, due to popular request, an experiential Imagery practicum with trained mentors to help and observe. We think the prices are great!! Early bird member is only $175!! Early bird non-member $215.

We will be presenting the Imagery Person of the Year award at our annual meeting (held immediately before the conference begins). I sure hope to see you there!

Next theme will be Serendipity. I find moments like this regularly – don’t you? Please share your story of how Serendipity shows up in your life. Your submissions are welcome and can be sent to me via the internet: bev@sheppardwest.com. Almost anything goes: poems, case presentations, jokes, artwork, educational opportunities and stories. Please send them off to me by August 15th. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Oh, by the way, we need a new Editor as I am ready to retire from the role. It’s an adventure and an opportunity for you to unleash your creativity. Please consider giving it a try or the last quarter’s issue may be just that – the “last.”

Warmly,

Bev

PS  Our second annual conference titled Imagery for the Future: Illuminating Lives is October 22-24, 2010. Check it out  here.

The Long Shadow of Trauma audio recording
with Bessel van der Kolk

Dr. van der Kolk discussed Complex Trauma and the need for a new diagnostic category – Development Trauma Disorder (DTD) to go into the DSM-V and the obstacles facing recognition of the adoption of the new diagnosis.

Rich Simon, PhD of the Psychotherapy Networker who interviewed Dr. van der Kolk reports:

Over 1600 people registered for this week’s One-on-One web interview, The Long Shadow of Trauma, with Bessel van der Kolk. This record turnout for our Networker LIVE webcast interview is a testimony to the central role that trauma treatment plays in our field.

“The FREE audio MP3 file of the April 14 interview with Bessel van der Kolk is now available on our website. Listen or download now. · To earn your CE credit, click here. Remember, you will have to log into the site to purchase your CE.”

Two Techniques for Working with Trauma

Two Techniques for Working with Trauma

Ruth Buczynski asks:

Are there more trauma-inducing events happening in the world or is it that I’m just tuned-in to them more?

Maybe it’s a little bit of both, and that probably means, too, that we need to know a lot more about its impact and treatment…information that is too new to be part of our previous graduate programs.

Go to my blog to find out about a new approach that blends two techniques that have shown a decrease in PTSD symptoms.

It’s really quite remarkable.

All best,

Ruth

“Joy” being our theme this quarter, I must share with you a beautiful event I recently witnessed. I was waiting curbside at the airport for my husband’s arrival when I noticed a 30-something man and an older gray-bearded gentleman, who I guessed might be his father, exiting the airport. As they reached the sidewalk, two young girls came running towards the older man. The younger of the two girls arrived first. She
raced towards the elder of the two gentlemen (grandfather?) with a gorgeous smile on her face and threw herself into his arms, squealing in delight. The second girl arrived right behind her and did the same. The “grandfather” was engulfed in this two person hug and I had to Imagine, because his back was to me, the smile on his face and the Joy he surely felt having such a loving and Joyful welcome. Tears sprang to my eyes witnessing this special event.

As always, each article in the issue relates to “Joy” in some way. I won’t say any more about them here because you might enjoy the surprises that await you. I want to thank all of our contributors for their dedication and efforts that make each issue of ImagiNews possible.

Telechat February 10: How to Read Mental Images

How to Read Mental Images: Learning the Hieroglyphic Language of the Mind for Clinical Use

with Gerald Epstein, MD

Dr. Epstein

Hieroglyphs – the pictorial language of the ancient Egyptian Pharaonic tradition is the only language ever to unite art and the spiritual dimension. In an analogous fashion, mental imagery is a hieroglyphic language where a pictorial representation intersects and combines with a divine language. The image is the true and natural language of the mind. These representations are called symbols, reflecting our everyday visible measurable reality and our invisible subjective qualitative consciousness – itself the repository of all the knowledge of ourselves. This language, like any other, is to be read as it is a book of life revealing ourselves to ourselves. In this talk I will discuss how to apply this method to both reading and fashioning imagery in your clinical practice.

Click here to visit Dr. Epstein’s website and read free articles written by him or about him.

Imagery International members can email us a note if you wish to attend this telechat.

We offer qualified non-member professionals a one time opportunity to join the conversation. Click here to request admission to the telechat.

Gerald N. Epstein, MD, has been a leading pioneer in the use of mental imagery for treating physical and emotional problems.  His education includes Medical school, residency in psychiatry and post-graduate training in psychiatry.  He trained 9 years with Madame Colette Aboulker-Muscat in “Waking Dream Therapy (long and short imagery practices); also influenced by the phenomonology practice of Medard Boss, MD.  He directs the American Institute for Mental Imagery (AIMI) a New York State Regent’s Chartered Post Graduate Training Center. His books include: Waking Dream Therapy; Healing Visualizations: Creating Health through Imagery; and most recently, Kabbalah for Inner Peace: Imagery and Insights to Guide you Through Your Day. Audios include: The Natural Laws of Self Healing, The Phoenix Process and Emotional Mastery (Feb, 2010). Under the auspices of the NIH OAM, he researched the efficacy of mental imagery in the treatment of asthma. As his work evolved over the years, he has become a leading exponent of the Western spiritual tradition and its application to healing and therapeutics.

How Do I Disconnect from Mind Chatter?

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Opening_To_Creativity

As I listen to my clients and the women who attended the retreat…the theme of– “How do I disconnect from the mind chatter? was a big one…

How do we deal with the challenges in our lives without obsessive worry?

In the retreat we talked alot about breathing, about stopping and noticing the sensations in our body…

We also talked about the importance of creating enough space in our lives to be present with the awe and wonder of the present moment and about ways to create a daily healing practice.

We explored our “circle of support” we imagined them in the guided imagery and we created collages that offered us a beautiful visual reminder.

(By the way, I was so excited to videotape all of those beautful collages encircling our alter.I had wanted to put the video on the website–and guess what..the lens cap was on…so–they are now only a memory in my imagination. -oh well..next time!)

The theme this month, Healing, really caused me to think deeply.

Bev Hollander

Bev Hollander

I found myself re-reading a book I have had for several years – Healers on Healing – a 1989 compilation of essays by renowned Healers edited by Richard Carlson, Ph.D. and Benjamin Shield. I was struck by the many ideas formulated. Because at least two of the contributors are in the Imagery field and known to many of us, I thought I’d quote from their essays.
