New! II Introduces Podcasts to Go!

Monday, January 24th, 2011

This year we are pleased to offer Podcasts to all — visitors and members alike.  Just click on http://imageryinternational.org/about-guided-imagery/podcasts and enjoy!

Listen to them at your convenience–they’re archived.

In our first podcast of January 2011, new president Juliet Rohde-Brown, PhD  interviews Martin Rossman, MD whose recent book The Worry Solution offers ways to change “bad worry” into “good worry” and life changing action. The science is compelling too as Dr. Rossman talks about the research on neuroplasticity.

Look for 6-8 podcasts this coming year, of exciting interviews with Imagery professionals, bringing you the latest applications and innovations, as well as the tried and true.

We are interested in your input on current podcasts and anyone you’d like to hear. Post your comments below.

2011 – Our New Board

Imagery International’s 2011 Board plus One

These are the folks who have elected to volunteer their time and imagination to keep Imagery International running. They bring wit, wisdom and hard work (with the help of bookkeeper and Office Manager Sandra Bolyard and our Website and Graphics Designer Jenn de la Fuente) to fulfill the mission of the Association.  Please give them a warm welcome and let us know your wishes for the coming year.

Board members are 2nd from left Jann Fredrickson, Member-at-Large and Conference Chair; third from left is Juliet Rohde-Brown, President and Programs Chair; next is Doreen Leighton, Secretary; Bev Hollander, Past President and ImagiNews Editor, Judith Ewing, Member-at-Large and ImagiNews C0-Editor; Laura Simko, Treasurer; and Susan Ezra, Membership Chair.  Far left is Sandra Warnken, who is not a current board member but ongoing as IT and Website Editor.

We thank outgoing officers:

Babs Vitale

Babs Vitale started out as Secretary then morphed to Treasurer.  She was Conference Treasurer for both 2009 and 2010.  She revealed an enormous talent for comedy.  Her wit during board meetings livened discussions. She wrote a hilarious skit for Beyond Ordinary Nursing’s 2008 conference and engaged that years board to take part.  We learned that humor and laughter feel good. Babs volunteered to take charge of Entertainment for Imagery International’s first Annual Conference.  She did a fantastic job with a program she titled “Spontaneous Combustion”. Saturday night’s entertainment program which allowed all of us to participate to whatever degree of discomfort we could handle doing fun and funny activities. We all laughed in delight with the doing or watching. We learned to play kazoos and got to take one home.  Thank you Babs for joining in and showing us all that you can have a good time and do a fantastic job besides.  See more about Babs and her CD for Menopausal symptoms on her website Rainbow Yoga/Jolly Mudra.

Margo Adair

We also said a sad goodbye to Margo Adair earlier in the year as she passed on after a spirited fight for her life against cancer.  Margo joined the 2007 board out as our Treasurer when we were transitioning into our non-profit organization.  With Bev Hollander and Esther Johnson, she spearheaded the creation of Imagery International’s first regional workshop called Harmony Hill.   She passed the Treasurer’s job to Babs Vitale and became our Programs Chair, a position she was delighted to take on.  She started by scheduling speakers for the Telechats. If they were recorded she edited the podcasts and made them available to members on our website.  Telechats are hour longs telephone conference calls where a guest speaker would present information pertaining to their work with Guided Imagery, for about half and hour, and then answer listeners questions.  She also started work on our speakers bureau, but was unable to finish. Her partner Bill Aal is continuing their Tools for Change program.

Please let us know your wishes for the coming year.  If you are interested in joining a committee, offering a skill or have ideas that would help get the word out about Guided Imagery please feel free to post a comment here.

“The Worry Solution”

Friday, December 3rd, 2010

“The Worry Solution” written by Martin Rossman, MD shows, with the use of breakthrough brain science, how to turn stress and anxiety into confidence and happiness.

Martin Rossman, MD

From Dr. Rossman’s blog post “Making Good Worry Better”

“Good worry” is worry that focuses on a problem that you may be able to do something about. Specific ways of both logical and emotional/intuitive thinking can help make you much more effective in resolving these issues or problems. Many people know what they need to do to change things in their lives for the better but have trouble acting on what they know.

Why would that be?  Here are some common reasons for not making progress:

·    You aren’t really clear on what it is you want to do; you have left the issue so vague and uncertain that no goal can be set.

·    You haven’t been able to imagine a good way to accomplish what you want to accomplish, sometimes because you have become stuck in one way of thinking.

·    You haven’t really chosen the necessary course of action, which prevents you from putting your energy and intention behind it.

·    You haven’t clearly delineated a plan that is likely to get you where you want to go.

·    There are parts of you that have fears, concerns, or objections to resolving this problem and you haven’t accounted for them.

·    You need more motivation, courage, creativity, or other personal qualities to help you move out of your stuck place.

Glenda Cedarleaf’s Newsletter

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

Glenda Cedarleaf dropped us a line to invite us to check out her November Newsletter here.

We read ‘Welcome to the third edition of “Keep Squeezing Drops of the Sun” sharing poetry, audios, videos and news to inspire and empower you.’

Glenda was on Imagery International conference committee and wrote a poem on the way to the conference last weekend.  She created a beautiful video you can play for your enjoyment. Her voice is lovely and soothing.

Glenda Cedarleaf

Looking over the rest of the newsletter we were introduced to a short clip of Wayne Muller speaking at an Institute of Noetic Sciences event.  Please check it out as he addresses his thoughts on why goodhearted people are so exhausted.

We have lost what it feels like to have done enough…… In a world and a culture that demands that more is always better and we have taken the 7 deadly sins of pride and greed and envy and lust and turned them into American values….

Watch the video for his inspiring message.  Thank Glenda for making me aware of this inspiring message and for working on Imagery Internationals Second Annual Conference.  It was a wonderful experience Glenda.

Using Guided Imagery for Creativity, Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Problem Solving

By the end of the day we want to use our minds in a proactive, positive way to be the driver of our life and not slaves to inner thoughts/emotions/memory/illusions – the spaghetti mind.

Why spaghetti? Because even though man has made tremendous advancements in science and technology, the mind’s operating system is still a mystery. We don’t really know the algorithm that is behind motivation and attention.

We all experience associative thoughts/emotions/sensations popping into our bodymind which influence our behavior and the quality of our life.

I see imagination as the simulator of the mind for creativity, innovation, entrepreneurship and problem solving. It’s an unlimited tool to check possibilities, explore a variety of options and be “open minded” where our logical, rational mind, that is so connected to acquired knowledge, sometimes prevents us from doing.

Imagination is a resource that has an ambivalent connotation: it’s positive when used for art and creativity…it’s negative when it is used as illusionary mind or ill mind.

Our minds like gestalt scenarios.  We like stories that are structured, with beginnings, bodies and ends. When we lack information or when our memories betray us, imagination comes in and fills the holes with information to complete the picture/ the story.

So how do we utilize imagination as a resource for creativity, innovation, entrepreneurship and problem solving and at the same time be aware and cautious of its illusionary side that can harm our balance and sanity? The first stage is to cleanup and order the desktop of our consciousness.  The “I” should look at himself in the mirror, observe the whole complexity of the dynamic layers of his being, and let the sane part of the mind take dominance in the whole process of self-management.
