No Direction But Its Own Bright Grace” came on a late spring day when I painted by the Piscataqua River in Eliot, Maine.

This day, I felt stirrings inside, and I wanted to find something different, something hidden, something that went unnoticed, yet in its quiet strength continued on, no matter the obstacles. Something worthy even though it would never call attention to itself; something that served with no expectation of reward. I found a secluded spot near a pier and saw a patch of sea grass in the water near the shallows. It swayed in the breeze and caught the sun, with the river undulating and sparkling around it. There was movement, stillness, light, shadow, all the elements and opposing forces that make up Life. Yet even in its beauty, it was humble. It called me, and so I tried to capture that elusive something it evoked in me.

When it was finished, I kept thinking of the word Grace and a line from Pablo Neruda’s poem “Water.”
