Seven daily essential mental activities to optimize brain matter and create well-being byDaniel  J. Siegel, MD

  • Focus Time When we closely focus on tasks in a goal-oriented way, we take on challenges that make deep connections in the brain.
  • Play Time When we allow ourselves to be spontaneous or creative, playfully enjoying novel experiences, we help make new connections in the brain.
  • Connecting Time When we connect with other people, ideally in person, and when we take time to appreciate our connection to the natural world around us, we activate and reinforce the brain’s relational circuitry.
  • Physical Time When we move our bodies, aerobically if medically possible, we strengthen the brain in many ways.
  • Time In When we quietly reflect internally, focusing on sensations, images, feelings and thoughts, we help to better integrate the brain.
  • Down Time When we are non-focused, without any specific goal, and let our mind wander or simply relax, we help the brain recharge.
  • Sleep Time When we give the brain the rest it needs, we consolidate learning and recover from the experiences of the day.

Emmett Miller, MD Offers 6 Month Workshop Feb 23

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

Dear colleagues, patients, and clients,

Dr. Emmett Miller

I will be presenting a new workshop series entitled, “Awakening Your Power To Heal, Transform, and Thrive” over the next 6 months. The first presentation will be on Feb 23, 2012, in Nevada City, CA. This may be the only presentation of this series in this area, and I believe you will find this workshop very valuable.  Please read the description below and seriously consider participating in one or all of the interactive evenings.

As a physician, therapist, and life coach, I have been leading groups and workshops since 1970. The “Awakening Your Power To Heal, Transform, and Thrive” workshop is a culmination of 40 years of my practice in healing transformations. My mission is to help people understand the power of their minds.  Overcoming the past and creating new pathways to health, love, success and happiness has always been my goal and is the goal of this workshop.

Through the use of guided imagery, cognitive restructuring, positive self-talk, and other mind-tools, I will offer methods of self-healing so that you can re-wire the internal messaging center of your brain, help you harness the energy of stress and use the wisdom of your awakened spirit to live authentically. If you are a health or helping professional of any kind, you will also find direct application to your work.

Mind over Matter: Patients Perception of Illness Makes a Difference

ScienceDaily (Jan. 27, 2012) — Whenever we fall ill, there are many different factors that come together to influence the course of our illness. Additional medical conditions, stress levels, and social support all have an impact on our health and well-being, especially when we are ill. But a new report suggests that what you think about your illness matters just as much, if not more, in determining your health outcomes.
